The Portal genre is a wide sprawling sub-genre of fantasy. They capture the essence of escapism by transporting characters from a mundane world into an extraordinary world filled with wonder.
Examples of Portal stories are Narnia, Alice in wonderland, Harry Potter, Spirited Away, and even Midsummer’s Night Dream.
The definition is simple a story that involves a character(s) travelling through a portal from the real world to a ‘other’ world.
The playing is a challenge!
To accomplish this improvisors need to develop their skills in creating and balancing realism and fantasy, setting the platform, awareness of the circle of possibilities in offers as they arrive, whose story is it and how to support them and planting seeds in the platform that can be reincorporated later in the story.
This is a story genre and the workshop will be focus heavily on scene work and narrative technique.
This workshop is about learning and trying out techniques to get out of the head and into the emotional relationship, from producing to reacting, from the “good idea“ to the authentic emotional response. This workshop is training to hear the unsaid, to be with yourself and with your partner and to create true relationships on stage. With truthful listening and authentic re-acting the scenes unfold effortlessly in front of us.
